How does a garage door jump the track?
A door usually leaves its tracks when a lift cable snaps or comes off its drum, often after a spring breaks. Bumps from a car or golf cart, worn rollers, loose track brackets and strong wind can also push rollers out of the channel.
When a garage door slips out of its tracks, it usually hangs at an angle, with rollers poking out on one side. That is not a random failure. Something made one side of the door stop rising or falling with the other.
Lifting cables
Most off-track doors in Lady Lake trace back to a cable. The two lift cables wind onto drums at the top of the door. If one frays and snaps, that side drops. If one goes slack, often because a spring broke, it can spring off its drum. Either way, the door twists and the rollers leave the track. Humid air rusts cable strands, which makes this more common here.
Spring failure
A broken spring changes how the door moves. The opener tries to haul the full weight, the door lurches, and cables lose tension. Uneven lifting pulls rollers sideways.
Impacts
Cars, golf carts and lawn equipment bump doors and tracks all the time. A slight bend in the vertical track can be enough to catch a roller. A hit to the door itself can shove it out of line.
Rollers past their prime
Rollers wear. Steel rollers rust and their bearings seize. Once a roller wobbles, it can ride up and out, most often at the curve near the top.
Tracks pulling apart
Track brackets screw into the wall framing. Vibration loosens them over time. As the tracks spread, rollers have less to hold on to.
Wind
A strong gust against a closed door can push it inward, bending the tracks or struts. That is one reason wind-rated doors use reinforcing struts.
What to do
Park the door where it is. Pull the opener's plug so nobody presses the button.
Keep people and pets out from under it.
Prying rollers back into the channel is a bad idea. Spring tension is still on the door.

The fix and the cost
A technician braces the door, rehangs or replaces the cables, reseats the rollers and repairs the track. Balance and springs are checked as well. An off-track door is frequently the result of a spring or cable that failed first.
In our posted price ranges, a door put back in its tracks is $150 to $245, cable and drum work is $155 to $295, and a bent length of track swapped out is $230 to $375.
